On Monday, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) indicated support for caste-based census. RSS's All India Publicity Chief Sunil Ambekar said that this is a sensitive issue and should not be used for political or electoral purposes. He stated that it should be used for the welfare of backward communities and castes. He also mentioned that no steps should be taken towards the sub-categorization of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) without consensus. Due to strong opposition from Dalit and tribal groups on the issue of sub-categorization, the BJP and other political parties have avoided taking a clear stand on it. Ambekar said, "Caste and ethnic relations in Hindu society are sensitive issues. They are important for our national unity and integrity. They should be handled with seriousness, not just for elections or politics."
