Assam: Govt Collects Rs 100 Crore as Revenue From Liquor Sales, Increase Excise Duty by 25%

  • In the last 5 days, Sarbanand Sonowal govt has collected over Rs 100 Crores as revenue from liquor sales.
  • Assam Excise minister Primal Suklabaidya said that liquor shops were opened as a part of lockdown relaxations, but if the shop owner doesn't follow social distancing they will shut them.
  • He also said that the state cabinet has decided to increase the excise duty on MRP of liquor bottle by 25% as the state had to face a huge loss due to the lockdown.
  • The Assam Excise dept data, on an average, people of the state have consumed 92.09 lakh bulk liter of liquor per month.
  • Earlier Delhi govt also raised the VAT on liquor by 70%.
