Maharashtra Denied Permission for Nizamuddin-like Event Near Mumbai in March

  • Maharashtra's HM Anil Deshmukh said that Maharashtra police canceled a large religious congregation in Vasai just days before the event was to begin last month.
  • They canceled the permission in the light COVID-19 pandemic as the event, to be held in Vasai, was to be attended by 50,000 people, including foreign nationals.
  • A trust named Shamim Education and Welfare Society sought permission to organize a grand congregation- Tablighi Ijtema on March 14 and 15, at Diwanman village in Vasai West. 
  • They wrote letters to police seeking permission to hold the program and it was granted on February 5, 2020. 
  • But, by the beginning of March, the news about COVID-19 spread and HM asked local police to strictly warn the organizers against having any such congregation at all.
