The SC in a judgment said that the govt is not bound to provide reservations for appointments and promotions to public posts.
It also said that courts cannot give directions compelling states to reserve jobs or positions for SC and STs.
The SC also stated that an individual does not have a fundamental right to claim reservation, and it is for the govt to decide whether reservations are required in appointments and promotions.
It set aside Uttrakhand HC's ruling nullifying a 2012 state govt's decision to fill up all posts in public services in the state without providing any reservations to SC/STs.
The court held that the state while deciding whether to provide reservation or not, can form its own opinion based on the material it has in its possession already.
