The AAP has won the Delhi assembly elections 2020 with a thumping majority. AAP has again created history by winning 62 Assembly seats. AAP had won 67 seats in the previous term.
The BJP has raised its tally from 3 to 8 this time. Congress couldn’t succeed in winning any seat. Congress doesn't have any single MLA in the Delhi Assembly.
The BJP was confident of crossing the halfway mark of 36 seats this time . The party campaigned very energetically in the capital with the face of PM Narendra Modi. The BJP employed their 200 MPs, central ministers, 11 Chief Ministers, and many other alliance leaders like Dushyant Chautala and Nitish Kumar to campaign for the BJP in the capital. Star campaigners like Sapna Chaudhary, Sunny Deol, Gautam Gambhir had also campaigned actively for the party.
The Home Minister himself conducted about 52 rallies, street corner meetings and road shows. The central theme of the BJP’s election campaign was on the national issues like CAA-NRC, Ram Temple to be constructed in 4 months, abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, etc.
The BJP tried its best to polarise the election on religious lines between Hindu-Muslims. Many BJP candidates have aslo declared this election as a contest between India and Pakistan.
Bjp also tried to politicize the issue of the 2 months long sit-in at shaheen bagh protest against the controversial CAA-NRC-NPR. BJP MP from west delhi, Parvesh Verma has also compared the people sitting on shaheen bagh with the extremists who were responsible for the exodus of kashmiri pandits from the valley. He called them rapists and said that they will enter the houses of delhietes and will rape the women.
The central finance minister for state, Anurag Thakur, has also raised some controversial slogans regarding Arvind Kejriwal. He indirectly called Arvind Kejriwal a traitor and raised the slogans of ‘death to traitors’ in a street corner meeting in Rithala.
The election commision has barred them for 2-3 days from campaigning and removed them from the star campaigner list due to these controversial comments made by them. Even after putting so much effort, the BJP couldn’t succeed to cross the double digit mark.
After the declaration of the results, BJP supporters started saying that the AAP managed to win the election just because they got the Muslim votes as the Muslims didn’t want to vote for BJP. The muslims votes didn’t divide between the AAP and the congress.
To justify this, they are saying that despite being the Deputy CM, Manish Sisodia managed to win the election in patparganj with a narrow margin of 3000 votes. But the AAP candidate from Okhla seat, Mr. Ammanatullah Khan won with a margin of more than 72000 votes. This is because the Okhla is a muslim dominated seat and there are less number of muslim voters in patparganj assembly seat.
But this is not true. If only muslim had voted for AAP, the AAP could not manage to win 62 seats. This could also be the probability that most of them would have forefeight their deposits, as there are less than 5% muslim voters in more than half of the assembly constituencies in Delhi. But the AAP got 53.57% of the vote share.
The candidate who managed to win with the biggest margin is AAP’s Sanjeev Jha from the Burari assembly constituency. He defeated the BJP supported JDU candidate, Shailendra Kumar with a margin of 88,518 votes. This is the biggest win in this assembly elections.
BJP supporters might say that there would be muslim voters in majority in the Burari constituency, that’s why this kind of result has come. But the demographic data shows a different picture.
As per 2011 census, Hinduism is the majority religion in Burari with 93.31 % followers. Islam is second popular religion in city of Burari with approximately 3.62 % following it.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and Home Minister Amit Shah have combinedly addressed a rally on feb 2, 2020 in Burari for the JDU candidate Shailendra Kumar. Still they lose and that too with the biggest margin.
A large number of purvanchali voters live in many unregularised colonies of Burari. The main reason of Sanjeev Jha winning from burari with this huge margin is the developmental works done by the Kejriwal Government in these unregularised colonies, the reforms done in the health and education sector and other welfare schemes that benefited the masses.
If this wouldn’t be the reason, the result might be opposite in the Burari, and all other constituencies. In delhi assembly election 2020, people have undoubtedly voted for development politics and sidelined communalism and hatred politics.
