Centre Orders West Bengal To Open Bangladesh Access

  • The Centre asked Mamata govt in West Bengal to allow movement of goods traffic through border crossings between India and Bangladesh.
  • Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla wrote a letter to West Bengal chief secretary Rajiva Sinha.
  • The letter wrote, “the unilateral action on the part of WB to stop the cross land border movement of essential goods would have larger implications for the Indian govt with regard to its legally binding international duties.”
  • Bhalla wrote, "West Bengal was not just violating the ministry of home affairs’ orders under DMA but also Articles 253, 256 and 257 of the Constitution of India."
  • It further added, "It has been reported that goods traffic through border crossings between India and Bangladesh, falling in WB, has still not resumed."
